Hinduism and the Indian Caste System
In Hinduism, all people belong to castes depending upon the social class into which they are born. Under this theological perspective, we are reincarnated as a particular class based upon our actions in our previous life. How you act and behave in this life will determine the caste into which you will be born upon reincarnation. While supported by the religious belief, the caste system is also a deeply ingrained political, economic, and social system that regiments every aspect of society and life. The caste determines where you will live, how you will dress, what level of education you will receive, what jobs you can take, and who you can marry. To the non-Hindu world, this system seems quite unjust and unnecessarily divisive, as it does to many Hindus. But, with any ingrained and deeply attached system of belief and function, the caste system is supported if not actively by the majority of Hindus, then by an internalized acceptance of it.
